Description:
Opportunity Discovers Oddly Shaped Black Meteorite on Mars
What kind of strange rock is this on Mars? Smooth surface, isolated and protruding, strange shape, large size, and unusual texture. NASA’s Opportunity rover discovered a strangely shaped black stone on the Martian surface, approximately 0.6 meters in diameter; scientists speculate it may be a meteorite. On July 18, NASA’s research team noticed this stone and subsequently named it "Block Island," at which point the rover had already driven ahead. For further study, ground controllers maneuvered Opportunity to backtrack about 250 meters. Scientists will use the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer to measure the rock’s composition and confirm whether it is a meteorite.
