This clear wide-angle telescope image presents distant galaxies scattered behind the stars of the constellation Pegasus. The most prominent is NGC 7331 in the upper right; this large spiral galaxy, located only 50 million light-years away, is one of several bright galaxies omitted from Messier’s famous 18th-century catalog. The group of seemingly disturbed galaxies in the lower left of the image is the famous Stephan’s Quintet. This quintet is approximately 300 million light-years away and serves as a spectacular example of multiple galaxy collisions. The image above captures a glimpse of this ongoing massive interaction. In the sky, the Quintet and NGC 7331 are separated by about half a degree.
