The summer vacation of more than a month has ended, and I have returned to school. To be precise, I arrived at school yesterday, but I was busy with cleaning, club activities, and other tasks, so I had no time to write anything on the blog. Waking up this morning and feeling a bit idle, I decided to ramble for a while.
Summer has passed just like that, which also means my freshman year is completely over, and I have become a senior. More than once, I have lamented that "time flies like an arrow, and days and months move like a shuttle," and I am increasingly beginning to appreciate this sentiment. Many people only realize the beauty of high school life after reaching university. I am a bit different; already in high school, I understood that university would not be as perfect as we imagined, so I hold the same nostalgia and expectations for both university and high school. Now that my freshman year is over, from an external perspective, the only change is that I have become thinner and perhaps more weathered. I still remember a physical examination after a year where my weight had actually dropped by ten pounds, to the point where I had to doubt the accuracy of the scale. I also remember how many times I have been called "uncle" by children or addressed as "senior" by older students...
Analyzing from within, what have I gained? Looking back, choosing South China Normal University (SCNU) might have been the most correct decision. The relaxed management style, convenient transportation, and proximity to home are all factors. Most importantly, it is not weak, but it is also not overly intense. In my view, these are all advantages. Anything too "perfect" does not suit me, which is why I never chose the "best" schools in junior high or high school. I do not want to be immersed in competition all day; I need a free research environment. Therefore, I made a decision: I will absolutely not participate in professional competitions during university! These competitions currently include Mathematical Modeling and the Undergraduate Mathematics Competition.
From this perspective, choosing to study mathematics seems most suitable. Firstly, I like mathematics; secondly, I am good at it, so completing coursework is not difficult for me. There is a saying that the month before university final exams is more arduous than the third year of high school. However, for me and my roommates, this was not the case; we still watched TV series and laughed together. While completing my coursework, I had more time to research my favorite subjects, astronomy and physics. This is the main thing I have learned in university. In the first semester, I gained a preliminary understanding of quantum mechanics; in the second semester, I gained an understanding of field theory. During the summer vacation, I deepened my knowledge of both. Now, although I haven’t fully cleared up the mathematics, I can basically understand their core ideas. I don’t know how efficient it is to learn these things within a year, but I am very clear that I still wasted a lot of time during this period. Even this blog feels like it has been updated much less frequently.
The happiest moments were cooking something in the dormitory with my roommates and some good friends. At those times, the dorm turned into a small kitchen, haha... I really enjoy making something to eat in my spare time; it is a form of enjoyment. Watching others eat what I have made is also a form of enjoyment. I still remember the days we went out for fundraising, the days we did green recycling, the friends we met during these activities, and the friendships that deepened through them—these are all incredibly precious things. Indeed, in university, one must make a few true friends; of course, one cannot "neglect" old friends either
As for the summer vacation, since I had to practice driving almost every morning, I didn’t have much free time. Later, I even had to chop wood in the afternoons—swinging the axe up and down, I don’t know how many times. Anyway, the amount of exercise this holiday was quite sufficient. The most likely result is—I’ve gotten thinner again But being able to help out at home is still a very happy thing. After all, this is my home.
Alright, summer vacation is over. It’s a new year, and indeed, there are new expectations. It’s still that same thought—I don’t want to make myself too busy; I just want to keep research simple.
