Pillars and Jets in the Carina Nebula.
This cosmic pillar of gas and dust is approximately two light-years wide. It is located within one of our galaxy’s largest star-forming regions, the Carina Nebula, which resides in the southern sky about 7,500 light-years away. The swirling appearance of the pillar is sculpted by the stellar winds and radiation from the young, hot, massive stars of the Carina Nebula, while many stars are being born inside the pillar itself. If you were to move a mouse over the original image, it would reveal another near-infrared image that can see through the gas; most prominent are two narrow, high-energy jets originating from a still-invisible newborn star. Both the visible and near-infrared images were captured by the newly installed Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope.
