The Spectacular Milky Way!

Our magnificent Milky Way galaxy crosses this grand sky panorama. In fact, the 800-megapixel resolution is capable of encompassing all the stars visible to the naked eye at night. This is part of the European Southern Observatory’s GigaGalaxy Zoom project, recording results from several months in 2008 and 2009 at special observation sites—the Atacama Desert in the Southern Hemisphere and the Canary Islands in the Northern Hemisphere. It also captures bright planets and even comets. The images were synthesized to show a 360-degree view of the Milky Way. To the lower left of the center are the Milky Way’s satellite galaxies—the Magellanic Clouds.
