Description:
This massive dark region is a “scar” left by a recent celestial impact at Jupiter’s south pole.
On July 19, Anthony Wesley, an amateur astronomer from Australia, first discovered this “scar”. Following Wesley’s discovery, on July 23, the Hubble Space Telescope captured images using its newly installed Wide Field Camera. A similar situation occurred in July 1994, which was the Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact event on Jupiter.
