This is the biggest disaster the Cosmos Station server has faced since the establishment of Scientific Space, and the interruption time is the longest to date. A large number of astronomy popularization websites were interrupted; the reason is simple: like Scientific Space, they were all hosted on the Cosmos Station server. Besides Scientific Space, other sites affected included the Mufu Astronomy Forum, Star Friends Space Station, Space Astronomy Network, etc.
History Review:
July 09 Found Scientific Space inaccessible, along with brother sites on Cosmos Station. Reason unknown, guessed temporary maintenance.
July 10 Received email from administrator Dr. Cui, as follows:
Due to construction in the South Building and last night’s rain, the floor of the data center in the first basement level of the South Building is currently covered in more than an inch of water. Multiple power plugs are directly submerged in water, which is extremely dangerous! To protect the safety of the server room equipment, we need to urgently shut down the power and handle the drainage.
Because of the large volume of water and a significant amount of silt, the area under the electrostatic floor needs to be thoroughly cleaned, which is almost equivalent to doing it all over again. Given the huge workload, the server room downtime may last up to a week. Please understand!!!
So I knew things were bad, but there was nothing I could do. Guangdong is far from Beijing; I couldn’t help, only pray silently.
July 13 Considered using my own computer to build a
server for a temporary page, but didn’t finish it. Later, I simply
pointed the domain spaces.ac.cn to my QQ Space.
July 16 Received email from Dr. Cui, server estimated to recover on Wednesday.
July 18 After nearly 10 days of interruption, our server is finally back up! However, since repairs are not yet fully complete, it will take some time for all functions to be restored.
