As Long As We Once Had Each Other --- ``Meeting Like Duckweed''

This song was introduced by Feng’er; it was the “theme song” of our school’s Senior High Year 1 summer camp last year. She said the lyrics were very well written, and I feel they are quite nice too ^_^.

“Ping” (duckweed) refers to a type of algae floating on the water surface. When the wind blows, they gather together under the force of the wind. Humans are like lotus leaves floating on the water; gathering and scattering are merely caused by the wind, drifting everywhere. Thus, there is the idiom “Meeting like duckweed on water” (Ping Shui Xiang Feng), referring to unintentional encounters or accidental meetings. “Ping Ju” (Meeting Like Duckweed) is the same.

A Song Dynasty poem once read, “Willow catkins in the wind, duckweed in the water; gathering and parting are both heartless.” This makes us feel the helplessness of life’s joys, sorrows, gatherings, and partings even more deeply. In this June, filled with the departures of the Gaokao (National College Entrance Examination), the sorrow of parting is even stronger. However, no matter what, tomorrow’s affairs have nothing to do with us; we must cherish today’s tasks and today’s people, and do our best to grasp what we have. Just as it is said—

In this way, when we truly face a helpless parting, we can wave with tears and a smile, singing “As long as we once had each other...”. This is the sound of “Meeting Like Duckweed”!

However, the helplessness of life does not mean we should be indifferent or “wait by a tree for a rabbit” (wait idly for opportunities). As the philosophical viewpoint suggests: humans cannot change objective laws, but they can utilize them. A few days ago, I downloaded and watched the new film Kung Fu Panda 2, and I gained a deep understanding: that “clumsy and fat” panda, Po, used Kung Fu to defeat the “weapons that can destroy Kung Fu.” Since this is possible, what else is impossible in life? Whether facing tomorrow with a smile or waiting for tomorrow with tears, we still have to live through today—ultimately, smiling will fill us with strength. Humans are inherently rebellious animals; why don’t we take rebellion to the end and challenge fate:
