The senior year classrooms are being used for the Gaokao (National College Entrance Examination), so we are on holiday. While the seniors are enthusiastically writing their essays, we “lower-grade” students also have to write one. This time, the topic is a titled essay—“People and Roads.”
What is the relationship between people and roads? Is it the person walking the road, or the road guiding the person?
Different people will have different answers. But in my view, the wise are always walking, while the foolish are “being walked.” Those who walk know their direction, dare to pursue what they love, and possess a fearless spirit; those who are “being walked” cannot find the compass in their hearts, just like starlight in the mist, flickering and uncertain. The destination of both people’s roads is the same, but one arrives while the other does not.
When we sail in the ocean of life, can we recognize whether we are “walking” or “being walked”? Only by walking oneself can one better pursue their dreams and take their life to the next level!
It is a great happiness to be able to follow one’s own interests
In a conversation with a friend I hadn’t seen for a long time, we talked about the choice of subjects for the Gaokao. That friend was a top student in science and a rare competitor of mine in junior high school, so I thought she would choose the science track. But the result was quite unexpected; my friend chose the liberal arts track. I was very puzzled and asked her why. She said:
“Although my liberal arts are weaker than my science, I will still work hard to improve. More importantly, I really like the fascinating subject of history, so for the sake of my interests, I chose the liberal arts track. It is very happy to be able to follow one’s own hobbies, isn’t it?”
I was stunned for a moment and seemed to understand something. Indeed, my friend was right; only when one likes something will they work hard and strive for it! Choosing such a life is a successful life. Bill Gates abandoned his studies to start a business, choosing a life of information technology; Hua Luogeng dropped out of school to study independently, choosing a life of mathematics; James Watt studied day and night, choosing a life of machinery…They all chose a life based on their own interests. No matter what the final result is, this is already the life one needs and is most satisfied with.
At this moment, I understand my friend’s profound words even more. For my dream, for my ideal, I choose a life of my own interests!
In fact, there is no need to see exactly how to do something
I believe many people have heard the little story of “the duck that was already at the mouth flying away.” It is said that two people saw a wild duck flying by at the same time. One thought of shooting it down to stew it, while the other thought of braising it. The two of them argued endlessly. Finally, they decided to have half each, but when they looked up, the wild duck was nowhere to be seen.
Perhaps we find the two people in the story ridiculous: why not shoot the wild duck down first? In fact, in life, we often encounter this situation: we want to do something, but we are hesitant; and in that hesitation, the opportunity is lost.
A friend wrote in a blog: “Worries actually slow down one’s pace; in fact, one does not need to see clearly how to do something.” Yes, pursuing life should be like this: once the goal is set, move forward bravely. Although we don’t know what lies ahead, life is wonderful precisely because of its many unknowns!
The American President Roosevelt once said: “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” Napoleon also said: “I succeeded because I had determination and never hesitated!” No one knows what a person ultimately cannot do, but if you don’t do it, you can’t do anything!
To achieve my goals, I will hesitate no more!

The road is still very long, but I believe that firm determination and unremitting effort will help me conquer every road in the world. From this moment on, I will no longer shrink back! The road is under my feet, and I will walk my own path firmly. I do not want to become one who is “being walked”! Only in this way can I achieve my goals!
