This article comes from “Tianya Community.” While expressing her own emotions, the author also expresses mine. Or rather, she expresses the emotions of every Chinese person! I pay my respects to the author here.
As the Father of Chinese Aerospace and the greatest scientist of 20th-century China, Qian Xuesen unfortunately passed away at 11:00 AM on October 31! He was 98 years old!
For the post-80s and post-90s generations, Qian Xuesen might only be a scientific symbol. However, for those born in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, he and Chen Jingrun were once idols for all Chinese people! Essentially, it was similar to how young people today frantically follow stars like Andy Lau. The difference is that they deeply moved generation after generation with their personal charisma and scientific talent! Especially in 1955, Qian Xuesen risked his life, abandoned his superior social status, wealth, and advanced research capabilities in the United States, and resolutely returned to China. This heroic act showed us what a true “patriot” is! In contrast to the present day, where countless people struggle to go to the United States and bow down for a “green card,” Qian Xuesen’s name is enough to shame them for a lifetime. Imagine that over 60 years ago, the Chinese did not yield to American guns and cannons, yet only 60 years later, a thin piece of “green card” paper easily defeated the psychological defenses of countless so-called Chinese people. Had we known this then, the Americans shouldn’t have come with planes and cannons; they should have come with sacks and sacks of “green cards”!
Regardless, we have plenty of reasons to deeply mourn Qian Xuesen! Compared to scientists of the same era, he has more qualities worth our remembrance. Here, the author suddenly thinks of another “science star”—the first Chinese Nobel Prize winner, “Yang X. Ning.” He and Qian Xuesen studied in the U.S. during the same period and were classmates. Why did he not return to serve the country in 1955 because of the U.S. authorities’ blockade? Why did he discard his Chinese nationality and resolutely become a Chinese-American just for the convenience of international travel? Why did he receive a Nobel Prize while Qian Xuesen did not? Why... What is even more shameless is that he actually tried several times to persuade Qian Xuesen to return to the U.S. and mobilized him to give up his Chinese nationality! No matter how dazzling his Nobel halo is, it appears so small in front of Comrade Qian Xuesen. I also believe that what Qian Xuesen left us is not just the title of “Father of Aerospace,” but more of a spirit, an integrity, and a quality! At the very least, he taught us the true connotation of “patriotism”!
